What's going to happen?

BT are switching off the UK’s PSTN and ISDN networks for good in December 2025. This means that any business phone or service that operates of the old analogue network will be switched off and left unusable.

The BT switch will affect thousands of businesses, especially those unaware of BT’s intention to phase out the old tech. Traditional PSTN phone lines are a legacy technology with high maintenance costs and many drawbacks.

In Short, because of the BT PSTN Switch Off, from 5th September 2023 you will no longer be able to order any new traditional PSTN services and by 2025 you must have totally upgraded to IP telephony to avoid interruption to your telephone services.

What does this mean for my business?

Outdated Tech

The old, analogue PSTN can’t keep up with the demands of modern communication, so the switch to fully digital will mark a big step forward. If you currently run anything through PSTN or ISDN, you’ll need to upgrade it to digital

Everything Will Use The Internet

It's not just our phone lines that will be affected by the PSTN switch-off. Any equipment that also uses PSTN will stop working too. That could be your alarm systems, cameras, fax machines (yes some are still in use!), even door entry systems and EPOS machines.

Time For VoIP

You'll still need phone lines for your business. That will mean switching to a digital technology, like a VoIP (Voice Over the Internet) phone system. Switching to internet phone systems brings benefits like better call quality, lower costs, better scalability. You can make or take calls in the office, at home or on the road – all with the same number.

Consider Your Broadband

Another thing you’ll need to consider is whether you need to upgrade your internet connection. Broadband is changing to full fibre connections, which are a lot faster and more reliable. This also works to improve productivity and efficiency in your business.

Pre-Planning.

You have a bit of time to plan, but it’s important not to leave everything to the last minute on this. As we get nearer to the deadline, suppliers will be stretched and you’ll want to allow time to transition to a new system.
