1. Start Menu Returns

The well missed Start Menu returns! Now, when you click the Start button at the left of the screen, two panels side by side appear. The left column shows pinned, recent, and most-used apps. The right column features a selection of live tiles that you’re able to customize, re-size, and re-organize. There’s also a power button at the top that gives options such as Shutdown, Start button, and Hibernate. The search field at the bottom will look up related Internet results in addition to programs and files. You can even have the Start Menu expand to a whole full screen. This eliminates the need for a Modern UI Start Screen.

 

2. Cortana on Desktop

Windows 10 has brought a digital assistant Cortana to desktop computers, which will make it easier to interact with the device. You’ll be able to search your hard drive for specific files, pull up photos from specific dates, or launch PowerPoint presentations by just telling telling the device. Cortana is even able to send an email whilst you’re busy doing something else, helping you to multi-task.

 

3. Xbox App

You will be able to play any Xbox One game on your device with this new Xbox app! It will have improved speed and graphic performance thanks to DirectX 12 Support. The app will even allow you to record, edit, and share your fragging victories with the Game DVR feature. You can have the previous 30 seconds of your game recorded, so that you’re able to catch any unexpected wins. You will also have the option the go on Xbox Live to play with your friends.

 

4. Project Spartan Browser

Windows 10 is even bringing you a new web browser – Project Spartan! New features include: a reading mode to improve layouts of long articles, PDF support, and a new note making feature in which you can scribble on any page you want and share through social networks, using a slide-in menu so that you won’t even have to leave the browser. Cortana is even featured within the browser, so she can pull contextual info from the site to do things like navigate to a restaurant you’re looking up.

 

5. Improved Multi Tasking

A brand new multiple desktops feature allows you to run another set of windows as if on multiple screens, but on only one physical monitor. You can set up a virtual desktop for those programs to reside in, rather than have multiple windows open on top of each other.

6. Universal Apps

Microsoft will introduce a software category named Universal Apps, which will use the same code but adapt their interface to your device. The company’s creating it’s own set of Universal Apps with OS, such as videos, photos, maps, music, people & messaging, and mail & calendar, all of which will function the same on phones, PCs, and tablets. Content will be stored and synced via Microsoft’s cloud service OneDrive so that you can pick up exactly where you left off on another device.

7. Office Apps Get Touch Support

New versions of Office apps in Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Excel will provide touch-first interface. In Outlook you will now have the option to delete messages from the inbox by simply swiping to the left, and to flag messages swiping to the right. Apps will look the same on both PC and mobile device’s.

 

8. Continuum

Microsoft wants to make it easier to switch between laptop and tablet. The system is going to detect whether or not you’ve plugged in a keyboard/mouse and switch modes to give convenient interaction.

 

9. Action Centre

Action Centre will replace the Charms menu in Windows 8 to provide a new way to view notifications in one place. It will collect your alerts from all of your apps. You can respond to certain apps from this panel, too.

 

10. Unified Settings / Control panel

Microsoft are simplifying your device settings to manage them all from one place in the Control Panel, instead of many different menu’s.
