It’s Senior Tech, Damian Joel!

July 12, 2017

The latest installment in our ‘Meet The Team’ series is Senior Technician, Damian Joel.

What’s your role at Your IT?

I’m effectively the third line of support, myself and my colleague Josh are where customers issues end up when they tend to require a more complex fix, The last line of defence if you will! The types of issues that we fix are Firewall configurations, infrastructure design and maintenance, detailed fault finding and diagnosis (This is normally the part where people’s eyes glaze over and a blank expression forms on their face so I won’t go into more detail!) In addition to this I also provide general IT support to our clients, helping the rest of the guys during busy times, supporting the apprentices with any questions they might have, and being the general fountain of all knowledge when Google isn’t fast enough, I sometimes amaze myself with the amount of knowledge I have stored up there over the years.  It nice to know that others turn to you when they need help, makes you feel like you have a purpose.

Tell us a bit about your background:

My love of IT stemmed from an early age, according to my family I could type my name on a keyboard at the age of 18 months, although it wouldn’t have been a PC, probably a Commodore Vic 20 or Dragon 32 (cue the glazed look again!) Since then I have seen many home computers, including the Spectrums, Atari’s, Amiga’s and the school’s BBC Micro’s and Acorn 3000’s, in fact my first PC didn’t come until I was 17 and my first job, working in a warehouse for an IT company, which I was duped into doing, after asking the careers officer to find me a job working in IT. I Built it myself from old machines being thrown out, and my mother can vouch for the fact that I was a hoarder of PC parts, as she had to hire a skip to dispose of them after she asked me to clean out my ‘mess’. Since then I have grown my knowledge through self-teaching and only within the last few years did I decide to certify myself to validate all the know how I have. I will leave it there, because I love talking about IT and my history in the industry, and you guys have probably dozed off already.

What are the plans for the future?

Ideally, I would like to become CCIE certified, and also MCSE certified, I am already part way towards these and continue to study, my next exam is booked in for August. Within the company I would Like to manage another Your IT branch, and earn mega money, failing that I would be happy to help Your IT grow in the marketplace, and developing my skill set in order to improve the services they can offer (and no I haven’t been paid to say that, I genuinely see the potential growth of the company)

Away from work what do you like to do to relax? As sad as it sounds, I don’t often relax as I always have something to do. When I do wind down though, I like to get away from it all, middle of nowhere, no technology, and just walk. I guess the polar opposite of what I do and enjoy day to day. I’m weird like that.

Now for the quick fire questions………..

Age: As old as my tongue and a bit older than my teeth

What’s the best part of your job? The moment you fix a complex problem successfully

What’s your idea of a perfect night out? Karaoke, beer, and ladies

Which historical figure would you like to go drinking with? Henry the Eighth

What would be your superpower? Time travel

How many sandwiches have you eaten off the floor? Loads

What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it? Family Guy, it lets my brain shut off late at night.

How many days have you gone without showering? 3 years (I lived in a property that only had a bath)

Finally, and this one is important, so please pay attention. What do you think cats dream about? Chasing a giant mouse ( or other general prey in giant form) and then having a kung fu fight while some motivational music plays in the background.
