Forget the fakes on BBC it’s a real Apprentice!
With the new series of The Apprentice kicking off we thought it was a good time to introduce ours! Ladies and Gentleman, it’s Kieran Starbuck.
What’s your role at Your IT?
I am first line support so I’m most likely to be the one answering the phone when a customer calls with an issue. I’ve been with Your IT for around 6 months now and I’m starting to be able to solve clients issue, which range from such things as fixing printing issues to setting up new users. I’m also spending time shadowing the more senior team members on complex issues to build my skills and knowledge. Of course, being the apprentice, I must deal with my colleagues annoying me with things such as hiding my monitor and making me jump as they walk past, and that’s just from Charley!
Tell us a bit about your background:
Even when I was causing widespread destruction in the younger years of school I was always eager in computers and therefore came out with a merit in ICT at GCSE, along with other qualifications such as business studies and sports studies. I secured a place in Swanwick Hall Sixth Form and set my focus on a career in business studies and left the sixth form with a B grade. However, once I left I decided to go back to my IT roots and that’s when came to Your IT. Continuing my learning with your IT has been very beneficial as I have been able to gain valuable work experience as well as learn new skills and gain extra qualifications.
What are the plans for the future?
My sights are set on completing my apprenticeship. There are 5 different courses that I need to Pass, these are Networking fundamentals and architecture, mobile and desktop operating systems, Microsoft cloud services, business processes as well as coding and logic. To pass my apprenticeship, I must also submit my coursework to a good quality standard. I have so far passed my MTA Networking Fundamentals and will be sitting the mobile and desktop operating systems exam at the end of October. In the medium term, my goals would be to sit a level 4 course in networking. Whilst it is difficult and won’t be easy, it is something I found interesting as setting up a network requires lots of planning and seeing it all come together, is something I find very satisfying. My long-term goal, would be to become a field engineer, going from client to client setting up there networks along with other tasks. This is because having face to face communication with clients and seeing different sites, right across the country is something I would be really interested in doing.
Away from work what do you like to do to relax?
To be 100% honest I don’t do much relaxing outside of work. I’m one of those people who prefer to be active, doing something, to pass the time. Therefore, I have plenty of hobbies that I like to do, the majority sports related. I play for a 11 a side team in my local area and finished last season with a respectable 17 goals from a left-wing position, although if I’m honest, I would prefer to be playing as a striker, which would suit my tall 6ft 4” frame. I also have training for this on a Wednesday. On a Monday evening, I play 5 a side in Derby, we have worked our way from the bottom and at the time of speaking, we are currently top of division 2. The last main hobby is that I go to the gym around 3-4 times a week, which I have been doing for over a year now. Along with my sporting hobbies, I also like going to the cinema, catching up with friends and family. When I’m not a complete busy bee, and when it is time to chill, I like to do it in front of my laptop watching TV Series or Playing FIFA or Call of Duty.
